Design code list and standardised properties for Building Information Models in building construction
There are currently no nationally standardised definitions or classifications for the products and building components used in architectural and structural design in Finland. The same content may be described in multiple ways across projects and organisations, and its meaning does not reliably remain unambiguous when transferred between systems. In particular, there is a clear need to standardise the information exchanged in IFC format to ensure consistent interpretation.
The objective of this project is to establish a formal and technology-neutral foundation for design coding systems and standardised information content in building construction BIM. Definitions and classifications will be developed on the basis of formal ontologies within the Semantic Web framework, ensuring that information content is unambiguous, machine-verifiable, and derivable into application-level formats, primarily IFC. The solution will not be tied to any specific software platform, but instead will enable controlled expansion and continuous development over time.
In the first phase, the scope will be defined, existing materials analysed, and a proof-of-concept model produced to demonstrate the practical feasibility of the approach. The outcome will be a foundation for a standardised vocabulary, definition principles, and a design coding system that improves semantic interoperability, reduces project- and organisation-specific solutions, and creates the conditions for consistent and automatable information exchange in building construction.

Project Manager | Ubigu
Otso Helenius is an information and process management specialist with 15 years of experience in the built environment sector. In his work, he applies formal methods and best practices in conceptual and logical modelling to support the development of BIM-related processes and information management.
Steering group
The project is governed by the buildingSMART Finland Building Domain Core Group. The group monitors progress, reviews key decisions, and ensures the quality and interoperability of the outputs as part of the national standardisation effort.
